The Importance of public reporting

Second Nature believes that transparency through public reporting is a cornerstone of climate action. Public disclosure of emissions data and climate action goals enables institutions to track progress against clear benchmarks and toward defined goals. While public disclosure can be challenging in today’s climate of skepticism around science and data, reporting serves as a powerful act of resistance and collective action. Many campuses are continuing to publish emissions publicly, and we are supporting them in doing so.

By contributing to aggregated data sets, colleges and universities help advance research, foster scholarship, and uphold the mission of higher education. At the same time, we recognize that flexibility is essential. We are offering our members the option to report their emissions in the reporting platform without publishing them to the public reporting module.

Public Reporting Platform

In 2022, Second Nature and the University of New Hampshire Sustainability Institute (UNHSI) expanded their partnership to more efficiently report greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions data and track GHG emission reductions publicly. UNHSI’s Sustainability Indicator Management & Analysis Platform (SIMAP) houses the public reporting module for the CLN. Climate Leadership Network(CLN) signatories commit to publicly reporting progress annually. Other CLN members (UC3 and Affiliates) can opt in to share their climate action data publicly.

Network benefit: Climate Leadership Network members receive a 35% discount for a paid SIMAP subscription. Email [email protected] to request the SIMAP discount code. Please note that your institution must be current with Climate Leadership Network dues to receive the SIMAP discount.

Greenhouse Gas Emissions

If you are a current SIMAP subscriber, these are your options for public reporting:

  1. Report yourself via the ‘public reporting’ option under the ‘account’ tab
  2. Have Second Nature publish your reports by emailing [email protected]
  3. Use the following link to schedule a meeting to walk through the public reporting process in SIMAP

If you are not a SIMAP Subscriber, Carbon and Climate Commitment signatories receive a
complimentary license to use the SIMAP Public Reporting Module. Please use the following link to schedule a meeting to walk through the public reporting process.
