The University Climate Change Coalition (UC3) is a Second Nature initiative that connects 26 of the world’s leading research universities committed to accelerating climate action on campus, in communities, and at a global scale. Second Nature supports UC3 universities to collaborate effectively, share knowledge, foster cross-sector partnerships, and drive meaningful and scalable action on climate change.
Taking bold action on climate change and delivering on the most ambitious goals of the Paris Agreement by making plans to constrain global average temperature rise below 1.5°C, increasing resilience, and improving inclusivity
Implementing strategies included in the 2020-2025 UC3 Strategic Plan, annual progress reporting, and payment of a $5,250 (USD) annual Coalition facilitation dues
Additionally, UC3 member universities actively participate in collaborative, cross-Coalition activities such as working groups for peer-to-peer knowledge-sharing, and Coalition-wide initiatives, which encourage deeper collaborative inquiry into specific climate issues that impact all members and the sector as a whole.
Faculty, researchers, and staff at UC3 member institutions have the opportunity to accelerate climate action efforts on campus, in their communities, and as a global coalition by connecting with counterparts from peer institutions, sharing knowledge and best practices, and collaborating on the development of new resources that help scale action beyond what individual universities can achieve on their own. Additionally, UC3 members have access to exclusive UC3 events, and senior leadership can use the UC3 to connect with other UC3 presidents, chancellors, or rectors for high-visibility and high-leverage events, as well as government leaders, business CEOs, and other executives that share a commitment to addressing the global climate challenge.
NOTE: UC3 Working groups are populated by members of the UC3 coalition, a group of 23 R1 Institutions. While group membership is limited to UC3 schools, working group outputs have sector-wide benefit and impact.

A group of appointed and elected leaders from member institutions who meet monthly to steward strategy and governance of UC3.
All the official designated liaisons to UC3 from each member institution meet monthly to discuss topics pertaining to campus climate action. This group receives regular updates on coalition opportunities to disseminate across their campuses, and provides feedback from their campus regarding UC3 priorities and engagement.
Scholars and Research program staff focused on transdisciplinary (TD) or community-engaged research meet monthly to network and collaborate on resources to build capacity in the TD field.
UC3 campuses attending the annual Conference of Parties convene monthly from May-December to develop educational webinars and engagement sessions for the higher education sector, and collaborate on participation in the COP.
Monthly discussions support research-intensive universities in developing and implementing high-impact climate-related CLL initiatives, by identifying and filling resource gaps, and by convening operational and academic practitioners to exchange ideas, methods, and experiences, and discover opportunities for collaborative work.
Participating campuses can receive mentorship in establishing or refining a campus wide sustainability literacy or culture assessment, and attend quarterly full cohort meetings to network with other campuses in the initiative and explore common questions and data analysis opportunities.
