A recommended carbon price range designed to help schools accelerate climate action, whether or not they have the capacity to calculate this on their own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><br><strong>Why Price Carbon?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Putting a price on carbon is one of the most powerful tools schools can use to drive climate solutions. It helps institutions understand the full impact of their emissions and make better financial and environmental decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are two main ways institutions approach internal carbon pricing:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Carbon Tax Model<\/strong> \u2013 Charges a fee per ton of emissions to fund climate solutions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Proxy Model<\/strong> \u2013 Assigns a dollar value to the broader damage caused by emissions (like health impacts and extreme weather) and factors this cost into decision making. Proxy models usually support higher prices in line with the true social cost of carbon.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><br>Second Nature explored both approaches, reviewing models from the EPA, UC system, Swarthmore, New York State, and others. Carbon Tax Price<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>$50\u2013$100\/ton<\/strong>, <strong>with an annual increase of<\/strong> <br><strong>3% + inflation<br><\/strong>Use this if you&#8217;re charging your institution for emissions and reinvesting in mitigation or offsets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. Proxy Carbon Price<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>$210\u2013$248\/ton<\/strong>, <strong>with an annual increase of <\/strong><br><strong>3% + inflation<br><\/strong>Use this as a decision-making tool to reflect the true societal cost of emissions\u2014no money changes hands, but climate impacts are accounted for.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><br><strong>Why These Prices?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>carbon tax price<\/strong> is grounded in federal estimates and offsets costs, designed to be actionable for schools of all sizes. It encourages schools to reinvest in their decarbonization work instead of buying offsets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>proxy price<\/strong> reflects the <strong>real impact of one ton of carbon<\/strong> on society. It\u2019s based on the EPA\u2019s social cost of carbon and helps schools make climate-smart decisions when evaluating construction, investments, or policies.Both prices include a <strong>3% marginal damages escalator<\/strong>, plus inflation, to keep up with growing climate risks and rising costs over time.<br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:17px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><br><strong>Looking Ahead: Turning Costs into Contributions<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Second Nature is seeking funding to work with SIMAP to provide a way for schools to report financial contributions to climate justice or mitigation efforts as part of their climate action strategies, which are in line with the social cost of carbon.
