{"id":38084,"date":"2025-02-13T07:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-02-13T12:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/secondnature.org\/?p=38084"},"modified":"2025-05-05T12:26:56","modified_gmt":"2025-05-05T16:26:56","slug":"a-call-to-action-at-the-2025-higher-education-climate-leadership-summit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/secondnature.org\/2025\/02\/13\/a-call-to-action-at-the-2025-higher-education-climate-leadership-summit\/","title":{"rendered":"A Call to Action at the 2025 Higher Education Climate Leadership Summit"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Over 380 higher education professionals gathered in Washington, D.C., February 2-4, 2025, for Second Nature\u2019s annual Higher Education Climate Leadership Summit. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The event, which took place a few blocks from the White House, <strong>provided<\/strong> <strong>a welcome contrast to the barrage of presidential executive orders that have deprioritized clean energy solutions and proposed to slash federal funding for key climate programs<\/strong>, such as those in the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) which provided critical support for the higher educations sector\u2019s efforts to accelerate impactful climate action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-flickr wp-block-embed-flickr\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<a data-flickr-embed='true' href='https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/secondnatureboston\/albums\/72177720323759251\/' title='2025 Higher Education Climate Leadership Summit by Second Nature_LeadOnClimate, on Flickr'><img src='https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54321437898_5a520a9032_c.jpg' width='800' height='600' alt='2025 Higher Education Climate Leadership Summit'><\/a><script async src='https:\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js' charset='utf-8'><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The 2025 Summit created a much-needed and timely space to garner the sector\u2019s collective and complementary strengths, resources, and expertise, celebrate examples of impactful and equitable climate action, and challenge our sector to practice rigorous honesty to address the challenges that will continue to unfold in the months and years ahead. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As part of the effort to celebrate impactful climate action across the sector, Second Nature\u2019s inaugural <a href=\"https:\/\/secondnature.org\/press-release\/six-colleges-and-universities-recognized-with-climate-luminary-honors-for-outstanding-climate-action-efforts\/\">Climate Luminary Honors<\/a> recognized six member institutions for their exemplary climate action efforts across five distinct categories: <strong>decarbonization, justice, community, workforce, and research, along with special recognition for Climate Resiliency in Action. <\/strong>The honorees include Carleton College, Emory University, University of Pittsburgh, Central Community College, University of Toronto, and Warren Wilson College, all demonstrating higher education&#8217;s essential role in driving sustainability, equity, and resilience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/secondnature.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/CHD06012-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-38086\" style=\"width:631px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/secondnature.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/CHD06012-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/secondnature.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/CHD06012-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/secondnature.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/CHD06012-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/secondnature.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/CHD06012-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/secondnature.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/CHD06012-2048x1365.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Opening Plenary Panel featuring panelists (left to right): Sacoby Wilson, Jennie Stephens, Frank Sesno, and Dana R.
